Contact heating of the Quaternary sediments by lava flows and firing events of archaeological pottery de-trap the geologic TL. The sediment and pottery, if subsequently buried, acquire radioactivity from the environment of the burial site. Crystallization events, like precipitation of tufa and gypsum, begin with ab initio zero radioactivity. These chemical sediments, till excavation, also acquire radioactivity from the surrounding environment. Sun-bleached weathered and transported sediments rapidly de-irradiate.
